AUTUMN CROCUS IN THE WOODS

Autumn crocus is already in bloom in the woods... sweet little flowers shyly thriving in sunny spots among high trees, and reminding that Autumn is not far away.

Colchicum autumnale, commonly known as autumn crocus, meadow saffron or naked lady, is a flower which resembles the true crocuses, but flowering in late summer and autumn. The name "naked lady" comes from the fact that the flowers emerge from the ground long after the leaves have died back.
It is an element of the submediterranean-subatlantic flora. Its area of diffusion reaches from Southern Ireland and the Southern area of Great Britain to France, the North of the Iberian Peninsula, the Southern areas of Middle Europe and Northern Italy, to the Northern portions of the Balkan Peninsula and Western Ukraine.
Autumn crocus thrives mostly on humid, rich meadows and woods -- in the latter case, preferably in sunny spots, where it is relatively warm and the plant is protected from winds.

Do you already have first signs of autumn showing up where you live?

'Naked lady', what an interesting name. I never knew!

Yes, autumn has definitely turned up yesterday! Like a sudden flick of the switch, and it's been non-stop rain. I like the cooler temperatures :)

Wow Anna, they are so beautiful... and so early for autumn! Actually we have some similar crocuses that I have been so amazed to see during the last few winters here. I can't remember exactly when they appear but I think it's something like December. I love October when the rain usually returns and everything - as if the other way around from other places - turns green and lush and life appears everywhere. So beautiful.
Hope this finds you well.
Hugs to you and sweet Zoe,
from Joan

I hope you've had a lovely Sun-day too!!!

Thank you for your sweet comment, dear Joan! It's amazing to see Nature turn green and lush, as you said... whether it's after the first rains in October (in the Greek islands) or in spring (in Middle Europe)! I can imagine you are looking forward to that magical time! :)
Hugs to you and all your adorable kitties!!! :)
